Plot

Leo Carax's cine-essay, shot in the Godardian style, is a self-reflection by the director on his filmography, spanning over 40 years. The idea for the short film arose during work on a project for the Parisian Centre Pompidou, where an exhibition in honor of the director was planned but never took place. In an attempt to answer the curators' question, "Where are you, Leo Carax?" he became absorbed in the process of self-discovery. The director's search leads to a vivid cinematic reflection, where personal history intertwines with the global, and film scenes blend with real life.

This is a poetic 40-minute self-portrait of Leo Carax, with whom he returned to Cannes after a successful premiere of his musical film "Annette" in 2021, which earned him the award for Best Director. "It's not me" may seem like a chaotic remix of images, but it's a true treasure for cinephiles. The film features Carax's favorite actor, Denis Lavant, playing Mr. Merde from "Tokyo!" and "Holy Motors," who starred in the director's most famous films ("Boy Meets Girl," "Bad Blood," "Mauvais Sang"). It's also an opportunity to see Baby Annette dancing to the sounds of David Bowie's "Modern Love" instead of the usual Sparks.
