Fantasy was initially created as a subgenre of non-scientific fiction, as the name comes from the English word "fantasy". The best fantasy films are built on the use of folk motifs, myths of the ancient world, and fairy tales. The events go beyond reality, and nearly any new fantasy is filled with spiritual plants, animals, or natural phenomena. Even the top fantasy films do not use scientific explanations for the events described, as the background becomes an image of an imaginary world - an alternative medieval reality, a futuristic reality, a broken time and space. As the events described in fantasy films are not explained by science, protagonists become gods and other mythic creatures - elves, dwarves, orcs ("Warcraft"), wizards ("Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them"), dragons ("Lord of the Rings"), people with unusual abilities ("Wonder Woman"), centaurs and demons. The plot is based on the opposition of light and darkness, the eternal struggle between good and evil. The best fantasy films are often built around the search for a magical artifact or object - a ring or a band, a golden fleece, the Grail, a sacred book, etc.
