The epic has its origins in mythology and oral folk art. In Ancient Greece, an epic was a heroic epic in the form of cycles of folk tales, songs and legends that told of the most significant historical events, legendary and historical figures, assessing their national significance and expressing popular beliefs about the clash of forces of nature, tribes and peoples. The Homeric epic is characterized by a parallelism of plot planes: the world of the gods and the world of heroes (who often had Olympian origins), Homeric comparison (in which the second member extends to an independent image or episode).
